Henri IV - An unfinished reign

Charles de Bourbon

Charles de Bourbon was the brother of Antoine de Bourbon and the uncle and godfather of Henri IV.

A bishop, he rose rapidly in the Catholic Church hierarchy: he was elevated to cardinal by Paul III (1548), and became archbishop of Rouen in 1550. He presided at the marriage of Henri and Marguerite de Valois. Very early, he became a member of the Holy League, and was even elected king of France by the League under the name of Charles X. He died on 9 May 1590.
