Henri IV - An unfinished reign


François de Bassompierre


François de Bassompierre was a French courtier from Lorraine. He served as a diplomat and Marshal of France, and was entrusted with sensitive missions by Henri IV.

He was a favourite of the king's and shared in the dissipations of court life. He was betrothed to Charlotte-Marguerite de Montmorency but, at the king's request, stepped aside in favour of Henri II de Condé. He finally wed Louise-Marguerite de Lorraine. He was imprisoned in the Bastille under Louis XIII in 1631.
