Henri IV - An unfinished reign

Jean de Beaumanoir

Jean de Beaumanoir, marquis de Lavardin, was one of Henri's childhood companions, since his father, Jean de Beaumanoir, was Henri's governor.

He was a Protestant, but converted to Catholicism after the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre. He then fought on the side of the Catholics during the Battle of Coutras (1587) against his former friend and coreligionist. In 1595, Jean changed back to the king's side in exchange for the governorship of Maine and the title of Marshal of France. He was seated in the king's carriage on the day Henri was assassinated.
