Henri IV - An unfinished reign

Maurice of Nassau

Maurice of Nassau, prince of Orange, stadtholder of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, was the son of William the Silent (1533–1584).

He was an excellent strategist, and led the cause of Dutch independence, which established the current borders of the Netherlands. Allied to Henri IV in 1596 by a three-way military alliance with England against Spain, he was committed to waging war with France against the Habsburgs, but these plans were cut short by Henri's assassination.
