Henri IV - An unfinished reign

Philippe II

Philip II was a prince of the House of Habsburg, and the son of Charles V and Isabella of Portugal.

He was king of Spain from 1556 until his death. He was a staunch defender of Catholicism allied with the Holy League, and an enemy of Henri IV. Throughout his reign, Philip II was heavily involved in the affairs of France, but the defeat of his armies at Amiens in 1597, and the Peace of Vervins the following year put an end to his ambitions.
