The news of the assassination of Henri IV on 14 May 1610 was greeted with astonishment across Europe. Maurice, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (1572–1632), a serious and excellent musician – and composer of this five-part pavane – was one of those most deeply affected. This Protestant prince had maintained a friendly and political correspondence with Henri IV, and was one of the king's most faithful allies in his geopolitical European plans (the "Grand Design") and in his opinions about the imperial throne.
