Imported from Italy in the mid-16th century, the passamezzo was a modern variant of the pavane. Like the pavane, the passamezzo was danced in pairs and in a line, but played "more quickly to a lighter beat, and in thus way it assumes the moderate tempo of a basse danse." (Thoinot Arbeau, Orchésographie, 1589).
