Henri IV - An unfinished reign

Henri IV and the conquest of France

By indicating to his entourage that Henri IV was his successor, Henri III legitimised the new king's accession to the throne. What was only recently a distant possibility was now a reality: Henri de Bourbon, king of Navarre, was now king of France. The swift series of events eroded the new sovereign's position even further. A Huguenot king of a France that was mostly Catholic, Henri IV was obliged to use all of his military and political skills to conquer a kingdom and its people who rejected him.
