Henri IV - An unfinished reign

A Romantic hero (19th century)

The 19th century witnessed the return in force of the figure of Henri IV, as well as the consolidation of the legend. Praised to the skies under the Restoration and the July Monarchy as the founding father of the dynasty, Henri IV became a key figure in the national narrative. Michelet wrote that the people were right "to hallow the memory of a singular and unique king who made everyone proud to be French." Henri was omnipresent, providing inspiration for the Troubadour Style of painting, historical novels and Epinal prints.
